Hendry 2016 Blocks 7 & 22 Zinfandel
George Hendry and his family have grown grapes on the same family farm in Napa Valley since 1939. Through eighty years of harvests, our connection to the land has deepened, and our knowledge has grown. Hendry Ranch is composed of 203 acres situated in the low, rolling hills just northwest of Napa, at the foot of Mt. Veeder, and includes 114 acres under vine. This location in the valley experiences substantial marine influence, allowing us to grow more than a dozen different types of wine grapes. All Hendry wines are made only from estate grapes, and are crafted to highlight the unique terroir of this very special vineyard.
The Blocks 7&22 Zinfandel is a journey through history. Block 7 was planted in 1975 with clone 2 and Block 22 was planted with the same clone in 1995. The balance of the two in the bottle is magic. Then fermentaion in close top fermenters took only 10 days and then all the juice went through a secodary malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine was then aged in a combination of new and used French Oak for 18 months, about 1/3 were new French Oak barrels.
Ruby in color. Soft aromas of dark cherry fruit, orange rind, cocoa, peppers, spice and black tea. Medium bodied, with subdued tannins. The balanced palate offers red fruits, bittersweet chocolate, smoke, and bright acid. Long finish.
